Preparing Your Shed or Barn For Winter

Preparing Your Storage Shed or Barn For Winter

Many of the issues you will be checking for in this list are for sheds & barns that may be a little older. However, by following this checklist it may help you make your particular structure last longer. Nothing holds up like an expertly crafted Amish Country shed, however over the course of time, use or unexpected damage may happen. Our goal in this blog post is to help you make the most of your structure whether it is a Weaver Barns shed, or a shed you may have purchased in the past from another builder. In the comments, let us know what your winter preparation checklist includes.

Preparing Your Shed For Winter Blog by Weaver Barns in Sugarcreek, Ohio's Amish Country

Clean & Organize

  1. Clean All Cob Webs
    • If you clean out the cob webs down once the weather is already starting to set in you shouldn’t walk into a shed full of spider webs in the spring.
  2. Sweep Out Shed
    • Sweep out any dirt, grime, bird seeds, etc. This will help discourage rodents from trying to use your shed as a safe haven. You will want to store bird seed in a more secure space perhaps a bucket during the winter months as rodents will be searching for food sources.
  3. Organize What You’ll Need During The Winter Months
    • Just as you might have your Christmas decorations and snow shovel pushed to the back during the summer months, you may want to consider reorganizing so you have access to your winter supplies when necessary. For example, move that snowblower up front, salt, etc.
    • Want to make your life easier going forward? Plan a layout and space for storage, tools and work space in your shed or barn. This will make ensure things are easier to find and help you make the most of your Weaver Barns structure. Hooks and shelves are your friends! ūüôā

Holes & Cracks

If you’ve had your shed for some time, you will want to check the base board/siding for any holes, cracks or other damage that may act as an access point for unwanted dwelling seekers. Though we want our shed to be cleaned out of potential food sources for rodents, we also want to make sure that the structure is as secure as possible to prevent them getting access in the first place. This will also help with insulation and further damage from occurring to the area.

  • If you find any damage, you may want to consider contacting the company you purchased your shed from to see about any potential warranties or service they may provide. Weaver Barns has an experienced service provider on our team to check damage in qualifying situations.

Ceiling & Shingles

Check your ceiling and shingles for any potential weak spots that may leak. You will want to avoid leaks or frosting over of the ceiling boards, as this could potentially cause rot. We have seen this in other shed products. If you can get ahead of leaking shingles it will save you time and money in the long run. Fixing shingles is much easier than having to fix the boards below them as well.

Windows & Doors

Be sure to make sure that the windows and doors are secure. That means the windows and doors, but also the boards that frame these entryways. This will help with insulation, but you guest it; those friendly creatures are still looking for a way into sheds and barns.

Clean Away Debris

Clean away debris from outside your structure. For example, leaves and debris can build up against the side of the structure. Brushing away debris and leaves will help prevent rot in the siding and flooring. It will also help prevent small critters from trying to make homes in or around your shed or barn.

Bonus Tips

Clean Tools & Mowers

Be sure to clean your tools, mowers and anything else that may have excess dirt or grime. This will prevent dirt from falling off of these tools eventually and ending up on the floor; as well as making your tools last longer by preventing rust and wear. Grass tends to clump up under mowers so you will want to give them a good cleaning after your final use for the year.

Store Mowers and Engines Without Fuel

Best practices is to store mowers, and other engines that won’t be used over the winter, without fuel in them.

Great Big Home and Garden Show – Cleveland, Ohio Display

Our team is back at the Cleveland Great Big Home & Garden Show at the IX Center. Weaver Barns has built a great display, including: Cedar Brooke home, sheds, barns, pavilions and more! We also have some great savings options available to people who visit our display at the Cleveland Show.

Cedar Brooke Home at Cleveland Home Show

Cleveland Great Big Home & Garden Show | 2019

February 1 – February 10

Our Cedar Brooke home is always a huge customer favorite when it is on display. The combination of old world Amish Country craftsmanship and modern amenities compliment each other wonderfully. This year the theme for the show was “easy breezy”.

About The Cedar Brooke Home

The outside of the home is a dramatic dark color. The interior is light and bright. When you walk in the primary entrance, off of the front porch, you are greeted by high ceilings in the living space. The living room area is beautifully designed and flows effortlessly into the kitchen, bar and dining area. There are double doors that open off of the side of the home into the dining area as well. A corner pantry adds plenty of space to the kitchen storage needs.

Down the hall you will find a laundry closet that is discretely hidden when the doors are closed. Further down the hall on the left you will enter the master bedroom. At the end of the hall on the right you will find the master bath, that features a beautiful large shower.

Under the stairs you will find a storage closet. At the top of the stairs you will find a landing area, that over looks the living space on the main floor, perfect for a desk or chairs. Off of the landing you will find the second bath.

There are also two more bedrooms upstairs. To your left you will find a large bedroom that features a spacious closet, and a great nook area with a window. To your right you will find the third bedroom that features a closet, plenty of space for a large bed and exterior stairs off the back of the home.

The model we built (as seen) for the Cleveland Great Big Home and Garden Show has been a huge hit with our guests. However, if you are looking for a variation on this design; all of our models can be customized. Weaver Barns also builds shells and finished out projects (within a specific region). Don’t miss out on seeing what other variations our clients have done with the Cedar Brooke home in the past.

Creating Your Home Office

Creating a comfortable and dynamic home office space can be a challenge when the extra room has to be converted to a guest bedroom or nursery. Space in your home and garage are often quickly taken up by other priorities. Often when the average person thinks of a shed they may think of a dark dirty space that you only go to when it’s time to dig out the Christmas lights or mow the yard. Our structures are designed to make the most of your space, and with the addition of lights and extra windows you can create a well lit space. What you may not have considered is creating a home office or studio in one of our sheds!

Home Office Shed & Barn Space by Weaver Barns

Why use a shed or barn as your office space:

  • Separate from the house – this allows you to remove yourself from the distractions and never ending tasks of the home.
  • Go to work without going to work – the act of preparing yourself to go to a designated space to work prepares you for the day; while still keeping you available to the home. Plus can you say “no commute”!
  • Leave work – when the office is in the home it can be hard to separate yourself from work. With a home office shed you can lock up the office door when it’s family time.
  • Free up space in your home – you can now use that room as a guest space or nursery, etc!
  • Be comfortable hosting clients – it can be awkward having clients come into your home; especially if you didn’t get the chance to tidy up. You know your office will always be ready to go, and create a professional feel.

Indeed many of our customers have used their sheds & barns as home office spaces. In fact, for years we have used a shed as our conference room for meetings. The team at Weaver Barns has been expanding over the past year, and additional space has become necessary. Now we have added a beautiful brand new structure for additional office space. So you can see how we use the structure, here is a breakdown of the features we used and recommend.

Home Office Shed & Barn Space by Weaver Barns

This structure is located at our headquarters in Sugarcreek, Ohio. We freed up space in our primary building by adding this structure out back. We have 9 cubicals set up in this building, and still have plenty of space for a central primary space and conference table. This is where our drafting team, marketing team and other roles are currently working. The “Little Switzerland of Ohio” has been our home and this structure is a great example of the craftsmanship that our team offers.¬†Our team loves the natural light and comfortable aesthetics and design of this structure. It is a great example of the merging of Amish Country Craftsmanship and modern day comforts.

Our Office Space Details:

  • 12 Windows
  • 4 Skylights
  • 4 Trapazoid
  • Beautiful Wood Beams
  • Metal Ceiling
  • 9 Cubicals
  • Ceiling Fans
  • Less of Natural Light
  • Sound Canceling Dividers
  • A/C Unit
  • Bonus: We definitely recommend sit-stand desks! We ordered custom wood slabs and used this sit-stand desk base for most of our desks.

Home Office Shed & Barn Space by Weaver Barns

If you are considering creating your own home office space, here is a summary of the features we recommend that you consider. This is a space you will be spending a lot of time in working and creating. You want to ensure that you are comfortable and it is a space you look forward to spending time in on a daily basis. You will also want to consider how much space you will need and if you will be hosting clients. Although each person has different priorities there are several core things to consider. Here is a quick summary of things we have noticed after working in our custom office space for the past several months.

Top Recommendations:

Natural Light ¬†Nobody likes working in the dark all day. Natural light is key for creating a welcoming work space. It’s easy on the eyes and is great for not feeling closed off from the world while working. Windows and skylights are a great way to bring natural light into your space.

Good Lighting Fixtures –¬†Natural light isn’t always available. For these situations we recommend good lighting fixtures.

Space –¬†You will want to factor in how much space you need for your work space: desk, chair, shelving, etc. If you will be sharing the space you may want a co-working table. The other note is if you are hosting clients, you may want to factor in a seating space for them or use the co-working space. You don’t want to feel to closed in, give yourself room to breathe.

Air Flow –¬†Air flow is crucial to keeping a fresh feeling and air in the space. Fans are an excellent option, windows can also be helpful depending on the weather.

Temperature Control –¬†There are great units that do both heating and cooling for temperature control year round.

Aesthetics –¬†Create a beautiful space that matches your style. Contrasting textures and colors are great for creating a unique space.

Power Supply –¬†The great thing about adding a shed or barn as an office is you can often run power from your home to the structure.

Fast Wifi/Boosters –¬†Fast Wifi is extremely important for any working space. Many people can keep their router in the house and just use a booster in your office space.

Choosing Your Buildings Siding

When the decision to invest in your very own structure is made, one of the most important options is your siding option. Not only does this affect the potential longevity of your siding, but it can also change the maintenance requirements and upfront cost of your building. Each type of siding offers a unique style and look. Whether you decide to purchase your structure from Weaver Barns, or another builder; this is a quick guide for anyone adding a structure to their space.

Choosing Your Siding - Weaver Barns

It’s your choice! If you are talking to a salesperson worth their salt, they will take the time to serve you and fully explain your options to you. These questions will help to narrow down your options and will lead to other questions you may want to consider.

Things to consider:

  • Does this fit my style? (wood, vinyl, etc)
  • Maintenance necessary for preferred siding types?
  • Estimated longevity of preferred siding types?
  • Does this fit my budget?

Each builder has their own siding options they may offer. However, the experienced team at Weaver Barns has narrowed it down to four simple choices to make the decision making process as efficient as possible. We also have structured it in a package system. For example, our top three siding options include all of our Superior 7 Features. Our EcoPro Series is our cost effective option and includes 4 of our Superior 7 Features.

What are your Superior 7 Features? Learn More

Siding can be a great place to save money on depending on your particular situation and structure type.

Here is how we chose to break down our options as an example: (listed in order of price)

The Roseburg DuraTemp siding we offer is a long lasting option, that also comes with a 50 Year Limited Warranty! The EcoPro offers great savings on your structure upfront. So of course what package makes sense with your budget? You may also want to consider the type of structure you are looking to build when choosing your siding package. Depending on your budget, you may spend more on your garage or home siding package vs your storage shed. Everybody’s budget and needs are different, so speak with your team member to decide what makes sense.

Hand Poured Candles In Ohio’s Amish Country – R. Classic Elements

Renee Miller started making Hand Poured Candles around the time of the Great Recession in 2008; a time of turmoil for so many. As most everybody knows all to well, the economy was bad and times were difficult for many. Renee decided to dive in and learn about the candle making process and spark a little light. The process was a practice in patience and attention to detail. It took Renee approximately two or three years to fully learn, and understand, the best practices for making the ideal hand poured candle.¬† As stated on their website,¬†“In the winter of 2010, I started making candles in my kitchen to sell in our gift shop, R Classic Elements, located in Shanesville, Ohio.” This is how Shanesville Candles Co. was born!

Renee Miller A Local Entrepreneur

Named for the small town of Shanesville where the Shanesville Candle Company resides. Shanesville, Ohio and Sugarcreek, Ohio merge together seamlessly you hardly know when you are leaving one and entering the other. In the beginning, Renee would get used wine bottles and cut them to pour her candles into to be sold. The process of cutting the bottles perfectly and before you could even pour the candles was extremely labor intensive. As with most entrepreneurial endeavors, time and space are some of the biggest obstacles to overcome when starting out.

Shanesville Candle Co. and R. Classic Elements in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The white building is built by Weaver Barns.

Hand Poured Candles in Shanesville, Ohio

Renee rented a space for a time, but today she has her own location located on the square in Shanesville, Ohio. Production was moved next to R. Classic Elements in 2013. Renee chose Weaver Barns to build her an extra building next to her store. Selecting the Highland Model by Weaver Barns, Renee was able to have a great space for her to grow her small business. Shanesville Candle Co. team member, Jolene, now makes the candles which can take two to three days to complete.

The process consists of: the mixing and melting process, pouring the candles, cooling and labeling. These beautiful hand poured soy candles come in different colors, scents and sizes; including melts. Renee is so happy to be able to provide local jobs, not only to her own employees, but she also orders her labels from local printers. What makes Shanesville Candles unique, “Our customers loved that we used only the best soy ingredients in the industry. We double scent each and every ounce of wax, the most any soy wax candle will hold,¬†This makes a beautiful clean burning candle.”

R. Classic Elements A Boutique Shop For You!

Originally, Renee purchased the Highland model to be a primitives shop. Today, the beautiful structure is prominently featured next to her store R. Classic Elements. When you stop by her store, the first thing you will notice when stepping into her store is the delicious aroma that is in her store. The Highland Shed that Renee purchased from Weaver Barns has now become a candle making facility!

Wisely, Renee chose to add extra windows to her building; allowing a lot of extra natural light into the structure. All of the beautiful candles in her store are created right next door in Renee’s Weaver Barn. Today her team has grown and to include multiple local community members; including an Amish couple who will be coming on board.

Shanesville Candle Co. by Renee Miller. Renee selected Weaver Barns to build her candle making facility.

Renee sources her beautiful products from some of the finest makers. R. Classic Elements features a wide array of products for your whole home including: indoor and outdoor decorations, clothing, dishware, fabrics and much more. “The best part is being able to make these candles right here in our community” stated Renee.

“Weaver Barns has always taken really good care of us” Renee shared as we toured the candle making facility. The Highland shed was customized with some great options like: Electricity, Pine Planking on the wall and ceiling, Mini-Split Air Conditioner/Heater, Two Ceiling fans to keep the space cool and insulation for efficiency. The Shanesville Candle Co. are always making customer favorites, but they also try and create new scents and product lines for their loyal customers.

Not only have Renee and her team at the Shanesville Candle Co. continued to create the finest hand poured candles, now they have expanded into melts, soaps and bath bombs! Check their site or Facebook page often for new product they are working on.

Renee’s beautiful shop has become a staple in The Little Switzerland of Ohio; Sugarcreek, Ohio. Our community features so many great places to dine and shop, so we invite you to make a day trip to our community. Only a short drive from Berlin, Ohio and Dover, Ohio there is plenty to do for the whole family in our welcoming community.

Weaver Barns is happy to share the community with great neighbors like Renee A Miller, R.Classic Elements and the Shanesville Candle Co. Planting Schedule For Ohio 101 (Zones 5 & 6)

To the gardening novice, knowing when to plant what can be a challenge. How do I give my garden the best chance to thrive? While there is always different opinions and traditions; below we assembled some great resources for you to reference. Weaver Barns has the finest Amish Country gardening sheds & barns right here in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country; Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Ohio Planting Schedule 101 Blog Post by Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek, Ohio; the heart of Ohio's Amish Country

Ohio Planting Schedule 101 Blog Post by Weaver Barns

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

This site explains the zones and enables you to find  your location. This is more if you want to see the actual map; regionally and nationally. However, really the primary information you need to know is in the next section. The graphics below will actually show you planting schedules.

“The 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.

For the first time, the map is available as an interactive GIS-based map, for which a broadband Internet connection is recommended, and as static images for those with slower Internet access. Users may also simply type in a ZIP Code and find the hardiness zone for that area.

No posters of the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map have been printed. But state, regional, and national images of the map can be downloaded and printed in a variety of sizes and resolutions.”

Not sure where you fall in the zones? Visit their website and plug in your zip code and it will give you more details about your location. Generally speaking Ohio has warmed up which allows you a wider window in which to plant and harvest.

Ohio: Vegetable Planting Calendar

Timing your seed planting and transplanting is drastically important to the health and production of your garden. First and Last Frost dates are a huge factor in dictating planting and harvesting estimates. Even if you decide to purchase plants that are already started at a local greenhouse; you can still use this calendar to time out when you should purchase/plant them in the ground. Ohio: Flower Planting Schedule

You can use the above zones when factoring when to plant your flowers around your home, garage or shed. Generally speaking your are safe to plant established flowers soon after our last frost. Some safe picks that many have had success are listed below.

Easy Annuals: These are plants that grow for one Summer.

  • Marigolds – These beautiful rust, orange and gold flowers bloom till fall and need little attention from you once they are established.
  • Petunias – These local favorites do well in heat and do very well potted or in your gardening beds. They need little care through the summer other than watering.

Perennials: These are plants that grow year after year and need minimal attention.

  • Hostas – These plants are very durable and need little attention year after year. They add some green and white to your beds.
  • Sedum – A Succulent variety that needs little to no attention. Needs almost no watering. Pink flowers bloom in late summer. The greenery will crawl across your beds.

Starting An Herb Garden At Home 101

Fresh Herbs, if you follow a few a general guidelines, are very easy to grow. The versatility of herbs allows you to keep them potted (indoors or outdoors) or simply plant them outside in the ground. These beautiful plants are perfect for the aroma in the space, as well as adding fresh flavors to your meals. These delicate yet timeless plants are great for getting the kids involved in the gardening experience as well. A simple herb garden, potted or not, is a wonderful addition to any home or outdoor space.

Learn the basics to starting your very own herb garden in or around your home. Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek hopes that you enjoy this blog post. Amish Country is famous for farms, quality craftsmanship and hospitality.

Selecting The Right Place to Grow Herbs Around Your Home

Deciding between potted herbs or planting your herbs in the ground? Consider this. Planting herbs in pots in the kitchen or window sill is an excellent option if you are limited on your outdoor space. Your plants will grow well and you will have fresh herbs for easy access as you prepare a delicious meal for your friends and family. However, you may find it surprising to hear that many of these herbs can grow to be fairly large (4-6 feet) when not planted in pots. Pots do tend to stunt the growth of the herbs, and can affect the quality of the plant. If you have the space outside to plant them in the ground you may want to do so to get the most out of your plants. Your herbs may surprise you at how much they spread and produce for you outside. We will be focusing on outdoor planting first. To learn more about growing potted herbs scroll down.

When selecting an outdoor planting location, be sure to observe the sunlight distribution throughout the day. Generally speaking, most herbs prefer full sun during the day. However if you live in a location where summer days rise above 90 degrees you will want to consider adding some shade for your plants. For example, choosing a space next to a gardening shed or garage where it will receive sun for half of the day and shade the second half. Another option would be near a tree or large plant that provides partial sun and shade throughout the day. Before planting simply ensure that the herbs are getting at least 4 to 6 hours of sun.

Planting Tips For Growing Healthy Herbs

Every plant is different. Every herb is different. When deciding where to plant you will also want to consider how much space your plant prefers. For example, most herbs will want either 1 to 4 feet in diameter for each plant.

Here is a general guideline:

  • 3-4 Feet – Rosemary, Sage, Mint Tea, Oregano
  • 2 Feet – Basil, Thyme, Tarragon
  • 1 Foot – Cilantro, Chives, Dill, Parsely

However, you may find that different spacing may work better for your plants. If you don’t have the space to allow for this spacing, work with what you have in your location. As you may know, some of the herbs above tend to spread so that is a large reason for the spacing. This allows the herbs to happily grow and produce the most for you.

You decide what works best for you: Potted or In Ground Plants.

Preparing Soil for Your Herb Garden

The next key to a healthy herb garden: soil that drains properly. You don’t want your plant to be sitting in flooded soil for large stretches of time. Once you select a spot that wont hold large amounts of water you can move on. When preparing the soil you will want to use your gardening tools to loosen up the ground and undo all of the compacting that has occurred over the years. Loose-soft soil will allow it to drain and provide a comfortable location for your herbs. Want to go the extra mile? Get some organic compost and spread an inch or two on top of the loosened soil then mix it in. This will provide extra nutrients for your herbs to feed on, as well as assist with water drainage.

I Planted My Herbs. Now What?

You planted your herbs and they look beautiful. Let’s keep them that way! You will want to water them as soon as the soil feels dry a couple inches down around the plant. Don’t neglect your plants you will want to check them often as nature can bring many variables that can change the drying period form week to week. Be sure not to over water your herbs! Remember that draining soil is key.

Harvesting Herbs A General Guide

You will need to simply pay attention to how your plant is doing. Is your plant healthy and strong? When your plant reaches about 7″ tall, give or take, you will be able to harvest about one third of the leaves. When cutting the leaves you will want to cut close to the leaf intersection. Several herbs actually grow up from the center, so a little research will solve this. Also, paying attention as to where your leaves are growing will clear this up as well.

Fresh herbs are a great way to add a fresh spin to a classic dish or salad.

Planting My Herbs In Containers

Surprising to many, herbs can often be easier to grow than a lot of traditional houseplants. Simply follow the same principles as the outdoor tips and you should have healthy herbs growing in no time. Growing in pots can be an easier way to have fresh herbs available to you.

Keys To Healthy Potted Herbs:

  • Sunny Warmspace: Patios, Decks, etc.
  • Healthy Soil That Drains: Good potting soil in a container that drains easily.
  • Space: Choose a large enough container for your herbs to grow and spread.

You can start your plants about 8″ apart when they are small, but you will want to transplant your herbs to larger containers as they grow. If you transplant your starter herbs to larger containers or to the ground outside you will want to: handle them gently, water them immediately after transplanting too.

Regardless of what you choose to do, enjoy the process! Adding potted herbs around your outdoor patio furniture not only looks beautiful and smell delicious, but it is very practical as well. Growing herbs can be such a rewarding experience. To have grown something that your family and friends will enjoy is a blessing. Not only can you add these herbs to cooked meals, pastas and more. You will definitely want to add your fresh herbs to your favorite green salad. Fresh Cilantro in a salad or dish can be a refreshing change to a traditional dish; for example this delicious salsa recipe. Let us know what your favorite herbs are!

Gardening advice and tips can vary from person to person, however this is a good place to start.
