How To Get The Most From Your Backyard Garden

It is garden season, and gardeners all through the Midwest are hard at work planting their vegetables.

backyard garden

It is garden season in the Midwest!

Backyard gardening is one of America’s most favorite hobbies, and for many, it is a chance to grow some or nearly all of their family’s fresh food right in their own backyard!

So for today’s Weaver Barns’ Backyard Lifestyle Post, we thought we thought we would share 3 helpful tips to get the most from your garden this year.

How To Get The Most From Your Backyard Garden

1. STAY OFF YOUR PLANTS

Whether you have raised beds, raised rows, regular rows, or just a few simple garden plants tucked in your flowerbed – don’t walk near them. When you compact the area around a plant with soil-clogging foot prints, it makes it hard for the roots to expand and grow.  Less roots = less ways for the plant to soak up the valuable water and nutrients from the soil that benefit the plant. If you leave the area around a plant alone and un-compacted, it makes for much healthier plants. It’s one reason raised beds and container gardens can be so effective.

2. MULCH YOUR PLANT

backyard gardening

Mulch is essential around garden plants to keep the moisture in place and the weeds out.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a pepper, cucumber, or tomato plant. Applying a healthy amount of mulch around the base of the plant really can make a difference! It helps the plant retain valuable moisture and keeps the soil temperature around the plant more regulated. It also helps keep out weeds that compete for nutrients. What to use as a mulch? Old grass clippings, shredded leaves, finished compost and straw all work great.

3. WATER SMART

This may be the best advice of all. Just remember 3 things when it comes to watering that make it simple. WHEN, HOW and HOW MUCH.

WHEN:

Watering in the early morning is best. Before the sun has a chance to really get hot. Water at the base of the plants and let it soak in. If you water in the afternoon – you not only run the risk of burning the leaves from the sun scorching the water that may hit the plant – but you lose a lot more to evaporation than watering in the early morning.

HOW:

backyard garden

With a nearly endless variety of options – you can create the perfect garden spot with a Weaver Barns’ shed

Water slowly and at the base of each plant. Let it soak in and come back a few times and apply smaller amounts that soak right in where it’s needed most at the root level of the plant Spraying the whole garden with a big hose and spray nozzle can lead to a lot of problems besides just scorching plants – like damaging plants, destroying the blooms that create the vegetables, or helping fungus and rot develop on wet moist leaves.

HOW MUCH

Too little water and they shrivel up. Too much water and they won’t develop the good and deep root structure needed for big plants. A good rule of thumb is that a garden plant typically needs to receive about 1 inch of water a week. If mother nature isn’t supplying that – then you need to supplement. If you are experiencing a prolonged dry spell – water every two to three days with about a 1/2″ of water to the plant at a time. This allows enough water to go deeper into the soil and build deeper roots – and gives the plants more consistent watering.

Why not every day you might ask? If you water every day – the plants will never send their roots deeper looking for water – and you end up with much less hardy and developed plants. Call it tough love watering to develop stronger plants – but it works.

And if you are an avid gardener – what could be better than your own personal beautiful backyard garden shed to keep all of your tools neat and organized? A Cabin In The Laurel Mountains – My Weaver Barns Story

So often, we hear back from proud Weaver Barns customers with photos and stories of their Weaver Barns shed, barn, garage, cottage or custom home.

My Weaver Barns Story

Steve’s original cabin, addition, and new garage in the background.

Such is the case with Steve Kobus, a high school principal who started out wanting to build a little retreat in the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania – and ended up with 3 Weaver structures and a place to retire to!

Here is Steve’s story in his own words:

I had the original portion of the cabin (16×30) built in 2004 in the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania.  I was looking for something simple, yet constructed in a solid manner.  After discovering Weaver Barns that summer, I had the original part of the cabin built in October.  I then set out on my journey to finish the interior.

The cabin addition

Steve’s cabin addition

As a high school principal, I found it relaxing to build and construct the interior of the cabin to my liking over the years.  I could only devote a weekend or two a month and two weeks in the summer to finish the interior.  After about 8 years, the interior was accomodating to my satisfaction. Family and friends enjoyed the relaxing environment that was created.  After all, I love snow, and the mountains of Pennsylvania haven’t disappointed me yet.

However, I then started looking at a new page in my life with retirement down the road.  I began to think about retiring to the cabin.  The loft would not be the best area for a bedroom, having to worry about going up and down a set of stairs. So I set out to Weaver Barns again to add an addition which would serve as a main floor bedroom (12×24).  Working closely with WB, I had more features put into the addition. Spending more time in the Laurel Mountains, the addition was finished in only two years.

A view from the woods

A view from the woods

Then the reality came, it was time to retire and I needed a garage.  For a third time I called on Weaver Barns. A year ago they built a fantastic (36×24) two story garage with plenty of room for my toys and an upstairs for all my woodworking tools.

The overall design and plans for the cabin (I refuse to call it a house) are about 80% complete.  (Is it ever complete?) I must say that I am extremely satisfied with the craftsmanship of all three structures as a result of Weaver Barns attention to detail. If I were to need a fourth structure, you better believe, I’d call WB!   –  Steve Kobus

It looks like Steve has certainly found his dream space in the Laurel Mountains!

The Basics Of Raising Backyard Chickens

chickens

A few backyard chickens can bring fresh eggs – and a lot of joy to your household!

As Spring approaches – many begin to think of raising their own little flock of backyard chickens. Chickens have become popular in the last decade – and with good reason!

Not only can they provide great tasting eggs – they also help to control insects and provide incredible fertilizer for gardens and landscapes.

Raising your own little flock of chickens comes down to the ability to provide the basic necessities of life – food, water, shelter – and a little space to keep them happy.

The Baby Chick Process:

chickens

Day old chicks already posing for the camera

Baby chicks will come to you as little 1 to 2 day-old balls of fur – and for the first 8 weeks of their life – they will need to be kept in a brooder until they are ready to join the “real world”.

You can easily make your own brooder from a galvanized stock tank or a few 2 x 4’s and chicken wire. You can also purchase ready-made brooders at most local farm and feed stores.

Brooders can be lined with pine shavings to serve as a bedding for the chicks. Sawdust and straw are not good choices for baby chicks – as they can get stuck to their backsides and create all kinds of health issues.

You will also need a heat lamp attached to the brooder to keep the temperature around 90 to 95 degrees during the baby chick’s first 5 to 7 days. With no feathers and just a little fuzz to protect them at birth, it’s important to provide them the warmth their little bodies need to survive. As they continue to grow – you can reduce the temperature by about 5 degrees each week until they feather out and can provide their own body heat..

At about 8 weeks, they will be ready to move to their permanent home.

The Weaver Barns Kwik Kit Chicken Coop Option

The Weaver Barns Kwik Kit Chicken Coop Option

When it comes to their permanent home – chickens need secure and safe housing – and a little area to roam about and enjoy the great outdoors. Chickens do have natural predators such as racoon, coyote and foxes – so you will need to have a secure coop for their protection.

As for size – most chicken “experts” will tell you to use 3 to 4 square feet of floor space per chicken in the coop – and about 10 square feet per chicken in the run. It doesn’t take a lot of space to enjoy fresh eggs and the companionship of a few backyard chickens!

Depending on the variety you choose – your chicks will usually begin to lay their first eggs anywhere from week 16 to week 20 – and many varieties of chickens can lay an egg 5 to 6 days a week.

Speaking of those eggs – YES – there is a huge difference from store-bought eggs! With one simple crack of a “home-raised” egg – its easy to see the difference in yolk and color – not to mention the great taste.
