Hand Poured Candles In Ohio’s Amish Country – R. Classic Elements

Renee Miller started making Hand Poured Candles around the time of the Great Recession in 2008; a time of turmoil for so many. As most everybody knows all to well, the economy was bad and times were difficult for many. Renee decided to dive in and learn about the candle making process and spark a little light. The process was a practice in patience and attention to detail. It took Renee approximately two or three years to fully learn, and understand, the best practices for making the ideal hand poured candle.  As stated on their website, “In the winter of 2010, I started making candles in my kitchen to sell in our gift shop, R Classic Elements, located in Shanesville, Ohio.” This is how Shanesville Candles Co. was born!

Renee Miller A Local Entrepreneur

Named for the small town of Shanesville where the Shanesville Candle Company resides. Shanesville, Ohio and Sugarcreek, Ohio merge together seamlessly you hardly know when you are leaving one and entering the other. In the beginning, Renee would get used wine bottles and cut them to pour her candles into to be sold. The process of cutting the bottles perfectly and before you could even pour the candles was extremely labor intensive. As with most entrepreneurial endeavors, time and space are some of the biggest obstacles to overcome when starting out.

Renee rented a space for a time, but today she has her own location located on the square in Shanesville, Ohio. Production was moved next to R. Classic Elements in 2013. Renee chose Weaver Barns to build her an extra building next to her store. Selecting the Highland Model by Weaver Barns, Renee was able to have a great space for her to grow her small business. Shanesville Candle Co. team member, Jolene, now makes the candles which can take two to three days to complete.

The process consists of: the mixing and melting process, pouring the candles, cooling and labeling. These beautiful hand poured soy candles come in different colors, scents and sizes; including melts. Renee is so happy to be able to provide local jobs, not only to her own employees, but she also orders her labels from local printers. What makes Shanesville Candles unique, “Our customers loved that we used only the best soy ingredients in the industry. We double scent each and every ounce of wax, the most any soy wax candle will hold, This makes a beautiful clean burning candle.”

R. Classic Elements A Boutique Shop For You!

Originally, Renee purchased the Highland model to be a primitives shop. Today, the beautiful structure is prominently featured next to her store R. Classic Elements. When you stop by her store, the first thing you will notice when stepping into her store is the delicious aroma that is in her store. The Highland Shed that Renee purchased from Weaver Barns has now become a candle making facility!

Wisely, Renee chose to add extra windows to her building; allowing a lot of extra natural light into the structure. All of the beautiful candles in her store are created right next door in Renee’s Weaver Barn. Today her team has grown and to include multiple local community members; including an Amish couple who will be coming on board.

Renee sources her beautiful products from some of the finest makers. R. Classic Elements features a wide array of products for your whole home including: indoor and outdoor decorations, clothing, dishware, fabrics and much more. “The best part is being able to make these candles right here in our community” stated Renee.

“Weaver Barns has always taken really good care of us” Renee shared as we toured the candle making facility. The Highland shed was customized with some great options like: Electricity, Pine Planking on the wall and ceiling, Mini-Split Air Conditioner/Heater, Two Ceiling fans to keep the space cool and insulation for efficiency. The Shanesville Candle Co. are always making customer favorites, but they also try and create new scents and product lines for their loyal customers.

Not only have Renee and her team at the Shanesville Candle Co. continued to create the finest hand poured candles, now they have expanded into melts, soaps and bath bombs! Check their site or Facebook page often for new product they are working on.

Planting Schedule For Ohio 101 (Zones 5 & 6)

To the gardening novice, knowing when to plant what can be a challenge. How do I give my garden the best chance to thrive? While there is always different opinions and traditions; below we assembled some great resources for you to reference. Weaver Barns has the finest Amish Country gardening sheds & barns right here in the heart of Ohio’s Amish Country; Sugarcreek, Ohio.

Ohio Planting Schedule 101 Blog Post by Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek, Ohio; the heart of Ohio's Amish Country

Ohio Planting Schedule 101 Blog Post by Weaver Barns

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

This site explains the zones and enables you to find  your location. This is more if you want to see the actual map; regionally and nationally. However, really the primary information you need to know is in the next section. The graphics below will actually show you planting schedules.

“The 2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature, divided into 10-degree F zones.

For the first time, the map is available as an interactive GIS-based map, for which a broadband Internet connection is recommended, and as static images for those with slower Internet access. Users may also simply type in a ZIP Code and find the hardiness zone for that area.

No posters of the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map have been printed. But state, regional, and national images of the map can be downloaded and printed in a variety of sizes and resolutions.”

Not sure where you fall in the zones? Visit their website and plug in your zip code and it will give you more details about your location. Generally speaking Ohio has warmed up which allows you a wider window in which to plant and harvest.

Ohio: Vegetable Planting Calendar

Timing your seed planting and transplanting is drastically important to the health and production of your garden. First and Last Frost dates are a huge factor in dictating planting and harvesting estimates. Even if you decide to purchase plants that are already started at a local greenhouse; you can still use this calendar to time out when you should purchase/plant them in the ground. We hope these resources are helpful to your garden planing process.

If you decide to start your seeds indoor you can start them in a kitchen with natural light or gardening shed with windows. Weaver Barn’s sheds & barns can be customized with plenty of windows for natural light and shelving to store seedlings or gardening tools. Also, a quick search online should bring up plenty of local greenhouses to purchase seeds, seedlings or more developed vegetable plants.

Ohio: Flower Planting Schedule

You can use the above zones when factoring when to plant your flowers around your home, garage or shed. Generally speaking your are safe to plant established flowers soon after our last frost. Some safe picks that many have had success are listed below.

Easy Annuals: These are plants that grow for one Summer.

  • Marigolds – These beautiful rust, orange and gold flowers bloom till fall and need little attention from you once they are established.
  • Petunias – These local favorites do well in heat and do very well potted or in your gardening beds. They need little care through the summer other than watering.

Perennials: These are plants that grow year after year and need minimal attention.

  • Hostas – These plants are very durable and need little attention year after year. They add some green and white to your beds.
  • Sedum – A Succulent variety that needs little to no attention. Needs almost no watering. Pink flowers bloom in late summer. The greenery will crawl across your beds.

Let us know in the comments below: Do you prefer Annuals or Perennials?

Starting An Herb Garden At Home 101

Fresh Herbs, if you follow a few a general guidelines, are very easy to grow. The versatility of herbs allows you to keep them potted (indoors or outdoors) or simply plant them outside in the ground. These beautiful plants are perfect for the aroma in the space, as well as adding fresh flavors to your meals. These delicate yet timeless plants are great for getting the kids involved in the gardening experience as well. A simple herb garden, potted or not, is a wonderful addition to any home or outdoor space.

Starting An Herb Garden At Home - Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek Ohio

Learn the basics to starting your very own herb garden in or around your home. Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek hopes that you enjoy this blog post. Amish Country is famous for farms, quality craftsmanship and hospitality.

Selecting The Right Place to Grow Herbs Around Your Home

Deciding between potted herbs or planting your herbs in the ground? Consider this. Planting herbs in pots in the kitchen or window sill is an excellent option if you are limited on your outdoor space. Your plants will grow well and you will have fresh herbs for easy access as you prepare a delicious meal for your friends and family. However, you may find it surprising to hear that many of these herbs can grow to be fairly large (4-6 feet) when not planted in pots. Pots do tend to stunt the growth of the herbs, and can affect the quality of the plant. If you have the space outside to plant them in the ground you may want to do so to get the most out of your plants. Your herbs may surprise you at how much they spread and produce for you outside. We will be focusing on outdoor planting first. To learn more about growing potted herbs scroll down.

When selecting an outdoor planting location, be sure to observe the sunlight distribution throughout the day. Generally speaking, most herbs prefer full sun during the day. However if you live in a location where summer days rise above 90 degrees you will want to consider adding some shade for your plants. For example, choosing a space next to a gardening shed or garage where it will receive sun for half of the day and shade the second half. Another option would be near a tree or large plant that provides partial sun and shade throughout the day. Before planting simply ensure that the herbs are getting at least 4 to 6 hours of sun.

Planting Tips For Growing Healthy Herbs

Every plant is different. Every herb is different. When deciding where to plant you will also want to consider how much space your plant prefers. For example, most herbs will want either 1 to 4 feet in diameter for each plant.

Here is a general guideline:

  • 3-4 Feet – Rosemary, Sage, Mint Tea, Oregano
  • 2 Feet – Basil, Thyme, Tarragon
  • 1 Foot – Cilantro, Chives, Dill, Parsely

However, you may find that different spacing may work better for your plants. If you don’t have the space to allow for this spacing, work with what you have in your location. As you may know, some of the herbs above tend to spread so that is a large reason for the spacing. This allows the herbs to happily grow and produce the most for you.

Starting An Herb Garden At Home - Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek Ohio

You decide what works best for you: Potted or In Ground Plants.

Preparing Soil for Your Herb Garden

The next key to a healthy herb garden: soil that drains properly. You don’t want your plant to be sitting in flooded soil for large stretches of time. Once you select a spot that wont hold large amounts of water you can move on. When preparing the soil you will want to use your gardening tools to loosen up the ground and undo all of the compacting that has occurred over the years. Loose-soft soil will allow it to drain and provide a comfortable location for your herbs. Want to go the extra mile? Get some organic compost and spread an inch or two on top of the loosened soil then mix it in. This will provide extra nutrients for your herbs to feed on, as well as assist with water drainage.

I Planted My Herbs. Now What?

You planted your herbs and they look beautiful. Let’s keep them that way! You will want to water them as soon as the soil feels dry a couple inches down around the plant. Don’t neglect your plants you will want to check them often as nature can bring many variables that can change the drying period form week to week. Be sure not to over water your herbs! Remember that draining soil is key.

Harvesting Herbs A General Guide

You will need to simply pay attention to how your plant is doing. Is your plant healthy and strong? When your plant reaches about 7″ tall, give or take, you will be able to harvest about one third of the leaves. When cutting the leaves you will want to cut close to the leaf intersection. Several herbs actually grow up from the center, so a little research will solve this. Also, paying attention as to where your leaves are growing will clear this up as well.

Starting An Herb Garden At Home - Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek Ohio

Fresh herbs are a great way to add a fresh spin to a classic dish or salad.

Planting My Herbs In Containers

Surprising to many, herbs can often be easier to grow than a lot of traditional houseplants. Simply follow the same principles as the outdoor tips and you should have healthy herbs growing in no time. Growing in pots can be an easier way to have fresh herbs available to you.

Keys To Healthy Potted Herbs:

  • Sunny Warmspace: Patios, Decks, etc.
  • Healthy Soil That Drains: Good potting soil in a container that drains easily.
  • Space: Choose a large enough container for your herbs to grow and spread.

You can start your plants about 8″ apart when they are small, but you will want to transplant your herbs to larger containers as they grow. If you transplant your starter herbs to larger containers or to the ground outside you will want to: handle them gently, water them immediately after transplanting too.

Regardless of what you choose to do, enjoy the process! Adding potted herbs around your outdoor patio furniture not only looks beautiful and smell delicious, but it is very practical as well. Growing herbs can be such a rewarding experience. To have grown something that your family and friends will enjoy is a blessing. Not only can you add these herbs to cooked meals, pastas and more. You will definitely want to add your fresh herbs to your favorite green salad. Fresh Cilantro in a salad or dish can be a refreshing change to a traditional dish; for example this delicious salsa recipe. Let us know what your favorite herbs are!

Gardening advice and tips can vary from person to person, however this is a good place to start.

Rustic Ravines – Creating An Oasis In The Foothills Of The Allegheny Mountains!

rustic ravines

The entrance to Rustic Ravines in Genoa, West Virginia

It is easy to see why Joe Boffo and his partner Paul Liimatta are so excited about creating Rustic Ravines, a new log cabin resort built this year and located in Genoa, West Virginia.

Rustic Ravines sits in the middle of some of the most gorgeous views you could ever ask for, at the foothills  of the Allegheny Mountain Range. And that is just the beginning!

“This area of West Virginia has the best off-road ATV trails in the world”, says Joe. “There are 50,000 acres of trails, with something for everyone to do.”

And with 300 acres, 11 rentals and 3 venues already in place at Rustic Ravines, they have something for everyone as well!

rustic ravines

The Genoa Cabin built by Weaver Barns, one of 6 current rentals at Rustic Ravines

Whether it is renting ATV’s for a thrilling ride on the trails, enjoying live music, great food, or just some quiet relaxation time – you can find it at Rustic Ravines.

“We started this year building our cabins – and already have 6 rentals in place”, says Boffo. “We completed our welcome center and party barn as well, and even included a great upper floor rental apartment in it for extra living space.”

As for those cabins – when it came time to build, Joe and his partner looked to Weaver Barns.

“We had looked at a few cabins that Weaver had built in Hocking Hills, Ohio and loved them, so we decided it would be a perfect fit here at Rustic Ravines.”

Rustic Ravines

Beautiful accommodations in a rustic setting!

Rustic Ravines features 6 Weaver Barns rental units with more on the way. The Genoa Cabin (pictured), sleeps 5, has a full kitchen and bath and Jacuzzi as well. And the views, well, they are simply spectacular!

I can’t say enough about the crew that Weaver Barns had out here to build these cabins. Their craftsmanship, work ethic and dedication was fabulous – honestly I was in awe of how they worked.”

And as fast as Weaver worked, you have to be impressed with how Joe and his partner Paul are quickly building Rustic Ravines into one of the premier destinations for fun and relaxation.

It is simply stunning to see what they have accomplished in such a short time.

Congratulations and good luck Joe and Paul on your incredible venture!

You can find out more about Rustic Ravines at rusticravines.com, or check out their great new video below to see it all in full color!

Everyone asks me when do you think you'll be done Joe? And, I usually say, jokingly: never LOL!!! But actually that's an honest answer…This project will never be done…Rustic Ravines has taken on a life of its' own and will become a destination Resort for people from all over the world to come and enjoy what we love about Wild and Wonderful West Virginia…Much like Southern Ohio is known for people renting cabins in Hocking Hills…South Western West Virginia will be known for people renting cabins in Rustic Ravines….Relaxing, Having Fun, Riding ATV's and Enjoying the majestic beauty of The Allegheny Mountain Range…People also have asked me: "Why here Joe?" And to this I say…Why not here? Martin Wach’s Vision For Tiny Homes In West Virginia – Weaver Barns’ Style!

Martin Wach's Vision For Tiny Homes In West Virginia. Amish Country Tiny Homes in WV

Martin Wach’s first model “Tiny Home” from Weaver Barns

When you spend a few minutes speaking with Martin Wach, you realize his energy and wonderful ideas are seemingly endless!

Martin and his wife Delia Bowman, who reside in Wheeling, West Virginia, are popular co-authors of a series of children’s books that are both educational and entertaining.

But in addition to his passion for writing, he has also been blessed with an entrepreneurial spirit that has served him well. Especially when it comes to his latest idea – low-cost and flood plain housing for the residents of Wheeling, West Virginia.

Martin Wach's Vision For Tiny Homes In West Virginia. Amish Country Tiny Homes in WV“50% of Wheeling sits in a flood plain”, says Martin, “and finding housing, and more importantly flood insurance can be difficult.”

But with the huge boom in the interest in tiny homes over the last decade, Martin thought there might be a way to use the smaller, more mobile housing units to fill a need. So Martin had Weaver Barn’s construct his first “Tiny Home” model. It is now up and on display on Wheeling Island in West Virginia. Even better, as a lover of gardens, he plans to have each  come complete wih

Martin Wach's Vision For Tiny Homes In West Virginia. Amish Country Tiny Homes in WVHouses on wheels can of course be moved in times of distress, making them ideal and affordable in low lying, flood plain areas. But beyond the wheels, Martin has an additional idea for putting some of the houses on pontoons.

“I  have two engineering seniors at Wheeling Jesuit University working on a wide range of ideas for the Pontoon project”, says Wach, “and brought our projects to Kent State because they have access to a wide range of programs to help us.”

“Weaver Barns has just been terrific throughout this whole process of getting started and with the first model, we can’t wait to see where it will lead.”

If  you want to find out more about this project, you can contact Martin via email at :[email protected]

Continued success Martin – and we will be sure to keep everyone updated on the story!

We love to share the stories of our wonderful customers and their Weaver Barns’ structures! Today’s story comes to us from the Holdridge’s, who share the story of their backyard Highland Garden Shed.

Highland Garden Shed by Weaver Barns of Sugarcreek, Ohio. Ohio Amish Country Cabin Builders.

The Holdridge’s Highland Garden Shed

When the Holdridge’s went looking for a hard-working garden shed back in 2013, they happened across a Weaver Barns display lot, and in the words of Jean Holdridge, “We fell in love!”

The model they fell in love with was none other than the Weaver Barns’ Highland Shed. The Highland’s rustic pine timber framing, porch, and higher roof pitch make it a great fit for almost any location and need, from pool house, to backyard get-away retreat, or in the Holdridge’s case, the ultimate garden shed.

“Working with the Weaver Barn folks was a simple process”, says Jean Holdridge.  “We prepared a 4-inch gravel base for the building to set on. To keep it safe from high winds, we installed 4 concrete “dead men” (no, Jimmy Hoffa is not buried under our Barn!!  on each corner.

My handy hubby installed 80-amp electrical service and completely wired the building inside and out.  We now enjoy gardening to the sound of music!”

Love that porch!

Fast forward to today, and the Holdridge’s Highland shed continues to serve them well. “This year, we had it all re-painted and top coated. It was still in really great shape, and only required a little TLC maintenance. And now, it looks brand new again!”

Thank you so much Jean to you and your husband for sharing your Weaver Barns story with us – and what a gorgeous setting for your garden shed!

Living The Dream In A Weaver Barns’ Farmhouse! Life At Old World Garden Farms

It’s hard to believe that a little over 15 months ago, Jim and Mary Competti didn’t have a single Weaver Barns’ structure on their property. But fast forward to today, and they have a Weaver-built house, garage, pavilion and garden shed to boot!

“We joke all the time that we might as well just hang a Weaver Barns sign at our entrance!,” says Mary, “But we simply love the look and quality of everything they have built here.”

And “here” for Mary and Jim is a little 3 acre farm in Nashport, Ohio they named Old World Garden Farms. For them, the “farm” has been a way to slow down, downsize, and enjoy life.

Back In 2010, seeking a way to become more responsible for the food on their table and to simplify the typical life of 2 full time professionals balancing careers and a family of four – they decided to create a space and place to grow their own food.

Starting from scratch, they worked together to convert the overgrown 3 acre field into a self-sustaining farm that could feed their family and their soul. They wanted to grow their own food without the use of chemicals or pesticides. Most important, they vowed to always have fun in the process.

They now grow nearly 75% of their own food, raise a small flock of chickens, maintain two bee hives, a small orchard and a fledgling vineyard, In the process they have used reclaimed and recycled materials to build everything from their barn, chicken coop, compost bins and more.

In early 2012, they created a website (oldworldgardenfarms.com) to document the entire process. Much to their shock, the website quickly took off. It has now grown to over 30,000,000 visitors and 160,000 followers from over 226 countries around the globe.

“I don’t think that either of us ever imagined it would grow and become what it has,” says Jim, “but I think it just goes to show you how many people really want to go back to living a more simple and fulfilling life.”

Their ultimate goal was to move from their surburban house and build a house and life at the farm. And it late 2015, they started to put those wheels in motion.

“We had been looking at all kinds of houses and options but just couldn’t find what we wanted. We knew we wanted to downsize and create something unique, and something that fit the farm and our life. And then fate stepped in,” says Mary.

“It was late October of 2015, and we were heading home from the farm one night, and Jim stopped at a store just up the road for gas. When he went in to pay, there happened to be a Weaver Barns brochure on the counter, and he loved the look of the house on the front cover. He came back out and showed it to me, and the next thing I knew we were heading up to Sugarcreek the following weekend to look at their models on site.”

As soon as we met everyone there and saw the barns, sheds and garages, it was over. We just really felt comfortable the minute we started working with them. I loved the fact that they could work with us to come up with a home that fit our needs. The house is only 1054 square feet, but we absolutely love every square inch. I think when we first started building, half of our friends and family thought we were crazy for downsizing so much. But honestly, it was the best thing we ever did!” Before we knew it, we went ahead with a Weaver garage to match.

The Compettis had Weaver barns complete the outside, and they finished the inside themselves. “We love to build and create as much as we can, and it was great working with someone who understood that,” said Jim.

This past year they added a Weaver Pavilion to the mix as well. “It was just the final thing that we needed at the farm, I loved their Pavilion from the moment I first saw it,” says Jim. “We love to live and enjoy the outdoors. We added a brick paver patio underneath, and it has become our outside home for the summer!

“We sit under the Pavilion almost every single night, and can’t believe how wonderful it finally feels to live here. It has become a ritual that at least once or twice a week someone stops to ask about it. I think for many people, they just really love the craftsmanship and attention to detail that Weaver takes in their buildings. We couldn’t be happier with life on our little farm!”
